Thoughts on OER

After reading Open Licensing and Open Education Licensing Policy by Cable Green, my main take away on OER is the importance of having governments require that all educational resources fund by the public have an open license so that the things paid for with tax payer dollars are free and available for those who paid for it. This makes logical sense and is surprising that it is just starting to take hold.

In Green’s chapter in this book,Open: The Philosophy and Practices that are Revolutionizing Education and Science, he goes in depth on the importance of OER and open licensing, and how important it is for educators and public funding to pave the way to creating a world where everyone can get the education they deserve.

Declaring myself on LiDA103

I am currently taking an online course, titled LiDA103, on open education, copyright and open licensing in a digital world, and this post is the part of that course where I introduce myself.

I am an Assistant Professor of Art with an emphasis in painting and drawing at Colorado Mesa University (here is a link to my artist website: elliotteric.com). I am also on the OER committee at my university and I am currently in the process of writing a digital OER textbook for the art department’s Two-Dimensional Design class.  This is a foundation class that is open to all students for their Fine Arts foundation requirement and is a class that is transferable to all colleges and universities. It is expensive to take because students are required to buy art supplies and a textbook, so our goal with the OER text is to save our students money, and also to allow teachers at any university to be able to use it for free too. I am currently searching for images to use for the textbook and think this course on copyright will be valuable in helping me understand as I get this book ready to be part of the Creative Commons. I also think that the information that I learn in this course will be very valuable for me as I move forward as a member of my universities OER committee.

Phenomenal: The Northwest Five Painting Colloquium

I am in a group show called ‘Phenomenal’ that is up Oct. 2nd- Nov. 4th that is part of ‘The Northwest Five Painting Colloquium’ at the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA.  The colloquium is November 3-4, 2017 and I will be taking part in a panel discussion on November 4th at 3:30pm.

This is all part of a two day conference that serves as a platform to discuss, connect and engage with painting from a fresh perspective. There will be exhibits, a keynote speaker, and panel discussions.  Here is a link with all the colloquium information:
